Radicalisation is an extremely complex phenomenon, therefore, understanding and preventing it requires interdisciplinary knowledge and advanced tools. Developing these tools is essential if we wish to avoid tensions, destabilisation, violence or, in extreme cases, terrorism. We need a multidisciplinary approach, multisectoral cooperation and sharing of research findings across borders.
Both in Poland and Europe, intensive efforts have been underway for years to build a society resilient to radicalisation. At the Polish Platform for Homeland Security, we have been addressing this topic since 2016 through various initiatives. This allowed us to better understand the need for further research, the improvement of tools, and the scope of recommendations and training. Furthermore, we believe in the importance of exchanging information at both national and European levels to synchronise efforts and not duplicate, know good practices and solutions, create networks for experience sharing, raise awareness, and build competencies.
Radicalisation. The PPHS Overview 2024
PLATFORMA is our pilot project aimed at sharing knowledge. This issue is dedicated to RADICALISATION – a phenomenon deserving of special attention and requiring ongoing preventive work. However, we do not aim to exhaust the topic within this edition. Instead, we want to contribute to the discourse by presenting selected aspects that share radicalisation as a common theme.
The seven articles are organised into three sections: KNOWLEDGE, NEEDS, SOLUTIONS. You will also find some information about the newly launched European Commission initiative, the ‘EU Knowledge Hub on preventing radicalisation’. We hope that the PLATFORMA and the topics collected in it will inspire further discussions, research, activities, implementations and cooperation. The content of the articles is based on the experiences, knowledge and subjective opinions of their authors.
If this initiative meets with your enthusiasm, we will be motivated to work on future editions, including other thematic areas related to security. All those interested in collaborating are invited to contact us at platforma@ppbw.pl.
Finally, I would like to express my thanks to the articles’ authors–the experts cooperating with the Polish Platform for Homeland Security. I would also like to thank the PPHS team–Łukasz Kielban – the lead editor, Magda Okuniewska – responsible for contact with the authors and translation, and Adam Michalak – responsible for graphic design and layout.
