Description

This project is conducted in the following two separate, but coordinated, areas:

  1. An agent system for monitoring the Internet directed at detecting criminal activities;
  2. An integrated environment to support operational activities and evidence procedures.

The first of these areas involves developing procedures and tools that allow for registration and identification of symptoms of criminal activities, as well as other dangers, to be found in the virtual environment of computer networks. Information collected in this fashion is to constitute sources of evidence or prerequisites for operational activities in particular cases or, on the general level, to be used in preventive actions. A special role in this area is played by an agent system for monitoring the Internet, whose goal is to support the information collecting process.

The second area comprises supporting investigative activities in the real world through integration (putting together) of information from different sources, perhaps preceded by a specific processing, as well as supporting the process of inference on the basis of this information. In performing such a general task, the environment is most of all intended for supporting the work of criminal analysis departments of the police. The environment will consist of specialized computer tools – components integrated in accordance with the idea of existence of “criminal analysis”. The components will form the following layers: data analysis directed at processing information coming from different sources (e.g. police databases, telephone billing, etc., to include ones from Internet monitoring) as well as visualization, which is responsible for making charts, diagrams (e.g. of connections, events, flow of goods, frequency of telephone calls) in a form that is as legible and inspiring as possible and suitable for evidence process and for conducting operational activities.

Goals

This project will cover two separate, but coordinated, areas:

  1. An agent system for monitoring the Internet directed at detecting criminal activities;
  2. An integrated environment to support operational activities and evidence collection procedures.
